Sir Jim Ratcliffe's third leaked email sheds more light on ruthless Man Utd plan

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is intent on revolutionising Manchester United and is not worried about upsetting people as he goes about implementing widespread changes.

The INEOS billionaire is embarking upon wholescale changes this summer – and it is not just Erik ten Hag who could lose his job. On Tuesday, an email to all employees not involved in scouting or the first team showed United were encouraging staff to leave the club by offering them an advance on a bonus.

Ratcliffe is desperate to reduce the number of staff in order to streamline things after the club lost £28.7million in their most recent accounts despite posting record revenues. And while encouraging his staff to return to the office, he has also extended the offer to others to take a pay-off to leave.

As reported by The Guardian, the email reads: “Whilst many have welcomed our new approach, we are aware that a number of colleagues prefer not to commit to this new way of working and are keen to understand their options.

"With this feedback in mind and the fact that we respect each colleague’s right to choose their approach to work, we will allow those who wish to resign now to claim their bonus early for this season if they cannot work from our offices from 1 June.”

United have insisted this move “isn’t a voluntary redundancy programme”, but the email will prove divisive and paint Ratcliffe in a less than sympathetic light to some. This isn’t the first time that the 71-year-old, who is worth £12.85bn according to Forbes, has shown his ruthless nature and the lengths he will go to in order to save money.

Leaked emails from earlier this year detailed that staff would be required to pay for their own travel to and from Wembley for the FA Cup final. It was a move that proved deeply unpopular and came after another moan about the state of the facilities at Old Trafford.

In leaked communications, Ratcliffe wrote of encountering a "disgrace" during a facilities tour and said standards "would not come close" to those at INEOS. His words were hardly a surprise, given his statements in public and the reputation he has built up in sport.

United should have known what to expect after Mercedes team principal Tofo Woflf spoke in October. “This is a no bull**** organisation,” he said when asked about Ratcliffe, who owns a one-third share of the F1 team. “They are huge in terms of revenue and profit. Decisions are being made quickly – three bullet points on a page and ‘here we go’. With Jim all the bull**** is cut out.”
