Where Does Steelers' Pickens Fall in Top-32 WR Rankings?

Entering his third year in the NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers receiver George Pickens is looking to build off his first 1,000-yard season. Despite the sub-par quarterback play, as injuries and poor performance saw the Steelers play three different quarterbacks last season, Pickens still managed to record career highs in receptions, 63, and yards, 1,140.

However, despite seemingly outperforming his circumstances, Pro Football Focus is still not impressed with the Steelers star. In the release of their top-32 receiver rankings, Pickens doesn't appear on the list until No. 30.

“George Pickens specializes in the spectacular, but he has also been a very productive receiver across the board despite some ugly quarterback situations,“ PFF writes. “Pickens averaged 2.11 yards per route run last season and put up 1,140 yards despite Kenny Pickett’s failure to develop as a sophomore.”

As we looked over the entire list from PFF, we realized they have three rookies who have never played a down in the NFL ahead of Pickens. The Arizona Cardinals’ Marvin Harrison Jr, the New York Giants’ Malik Nabers, and the Chicago Bears’ Rome Odunze rank above Pickens.

I am not here to say that those receivers aren’t better than Pickens; however, I will say that Pickens has been in the league for two years and has progressed each year. Ranking players who haven’t set foot on the field in a real NFL game ahead of him seems insulting and shortsighted.

Let’s be honest. He made those strides despite below-average quarterback play. However, the Steelers hope that will change after this offseason's signing of Russell Wilson. If Wilson can provide stability and consistency under center, then it seems likely Pickens will enjoy another strong season and one that could move him up the rankings.

Pickens should benefit greatly from Wilson’s presence in the backfield and could and should move way up this list by season's end.
