hozier makes searing statement on gaza in irish slamming 'racism'

Hozier returned to Boston Calling this year, after previously playing the festival in 2015

Irish musician Hozier took to the stage at Boston Calling festival this past weekend. The singer-songwriter used his time on stage to address the current global crises and even spoke in the Irish language.

Performing on the Red Stage on the third and final night of the festival, Hozier interacted with the crowd, who were delighted to hear him performing songs from his new EP, Unheard, which was released on March 22. Between songs, he spoke directly to the audience, kicking off his set with some words ‘as Gaeilge.’

Irish speaking fans enjoyed an exclusive and personal address from the musician who grew up in Co Wicklow. He often uses the Irish language, in both his music and interviews, despite not being fluent.

The artist is known for frequently speaking out about political and social matters at his shows. He engaged in a monologue that lasted several minutes, addressing several topical issues like LGBTQ+ rights and women's suffrage, however, he dove deepest into the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

He said: “We wouldn’t want our neighbors to live with racism or the fear of hatred around the corner. We wouldn’t want that. We would want better for them. We wouldn’t want them to live with Islamophobia. We wouldn’t want them to have to face antisemitism. And I believe at the core of people - on the whole - is good. I genuinely do.”

The singer-songwriter has made reference in his music to British imperialism and the plight of post-colonial Ireland many times. Songs like Run, Foreigner's God and Swan upon Leda address social issues in Ireland.

He said: “The peace and security in my country, that was two communities coming together despite a huge amount - hundreds of years - of a history of occupation, and saying ‘peace is better.’ The American people and the American government were a party to that peace brokerage.”

The audience was receptive to the rant, likely filled with some of thousands of Massachusetts college students who have been actively protesting and calling for a ceasefire. Some festival-attendees took to social media to express their dissatisfaction with the lack of crowd control during Hozier's set, particularly during the spirited rant.
