Underrated Heroes In The Witcher Series

The Witcher universe is vast and complex. Even after three main games and an entire series dedicated to exploring it, there seems to be no shortage of new possibilities and terrifying monsters to scare players and naughty children on the outskirts of Novigrad. As it happens in almost every story, some brave warriors take the spotlight and have bards sing songs in their honor, forever destined to be remembered.

The Witcher 4 Shouldnt Be Afraid to Take Liberties With an Iconic Feature

The Witcher 4 could possibly move beyond Geralt's legendary tale and expand with new signs, diverse stories, and fresher settings.

But what about those unsung heroes who tirelessly help Geralt in his endless quest against the Wild Hunt and the vicious monsters plaguing The Continent? Here are some characters in the Witcher series that don't get enough credit.

Zoltan Chivay

A Big Heart In A Small Friend

  • Loyal to Geralt
  • Has appeared in all 3 games

Zoltan is one of the few dwarves Geralt can call a friend. They first met on the outskirts of Vizima during a fight with a group of thugs. Throughout the series, Zoltan has proven to be a trustworthy friend to Geralt and his companions.

Not once has Zoltan shied away from a proper tavern brawl or a drinking contest among familiar faces, and he likely never will. This mighty dwarf certainly doesn't get enough credit for all he's done, but it's always nice to see him on screen and fight alongside him.

Vernon Roche

Temera's Hero

  • Avid leader
  • Military Strategist

As the commander of Temeria's Special Forces, the Blue Stripes, Vernon Roche has played a significant role in keeping the peace in several areas of The Continent. Without his brilliant military strategies and undying loyalty to his king, Foltest, the pacification of the Mahakaman foothills wouldn't have been possible.

Having first appeared in The Witcher 2, Vernon Roche has occasionally showcased behavior unfit for a hero, but it's undeniable that, while sometimes ruthless and radical, his actions have saved more lives than they have taken.

Tomira The Herbalist

A Griffin's Terror

  • Expert knowledge of herbs
  • Key to defeating the Beast of White Orchard

The Witcher series is packed with formidable enemies that put Geralt's skills to the test at every turn, and the Griffin that terrorized White Orchard during the very first missions of The Witcher 3 is no exception.

Tomira the Herbalist played a significant role in the Witcher's victory against the winged creature, as she pointed him toward the location of the ingredient buckthorn, an herb that Geralt planned to use as bait. Without her expert knowledge of herbs, her kind-hearted nature, and her desire to help others, the Beast of White Orchard would have taken many more lives before meeting its end.

Sigismund Dijkstra

A Man Who Fights For King And Country

  • Master spy
  • Cunning and decisive

As players well know, Sigismund Dijkstra is no saint, nor does he want to be one. As head of the Redanian intelligence organization, he's always aware of everything that's happening throughout The Continent and has fingers in almost every pie.

Dijkstra has a scheming personality that allows no room for error, mercy, or second thoughts. Although most people would classify him as an antihero, or even a flat-out villain, his actions and devious plans have prevented large-scale conflicts that would have cost thousands of lives.

Shani

The Selfless Medic

  • One of Geralt's many love interests
  • Potential caregiver of Alvin, The Source Child

An excellent medic who has appeared since the first installment of the game series, Shani is smart, caring, and overall an interesting character. Compared with Geralt's other love interests, Shani falls short in terms of how deep players are allowed to delve into their story together.

Shani is intelligent, reliable, and loyal, all qualities that are made evident throughout the series, especially the Hearts of Stone DLC for The Witcher 3. For players who want Alvin to have a happy life, she's the right choice and his best shot at a normal childhood.

Regis

The Abstinent Vampire

  • A Higher Vampire with a conscience
  • Key ally in Blood and Wine

Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy, better known simply as "Regis" sets a very important example to all creatures in The Witcher universe. As a Higher Vampire, Regis doesn't need to drink human blood to survive, so he has sworn to resist the urge to consume it, as he doesn't wish to become a monster.

The Witcher 3: Bringing Regis Back Was A Smart Move

Regis is one of the most memorable characters in the books, which is why it was a good idea for CDPR to include him in The Witcher 3.

This eloquent creature of the night deserves much more praise than he gets, as not only has he chosen to abstain from harming people but also plays a significant role in Geralt's victory against Dettlaff van der Eretein.

Anna Henrietta

A Queen For The People

  • Loyal to her people
  • Diplomatic and ready for action

While the Duchy of Toussaint might be heavily based in France, the nature of its ruler is nothing like that of real-life French hierarchs, such as Marie Antoinette, whose portrayal in history books isn't exactly positive.

Despite her royal blood, Anna Henrietta is an outstanding ruler who hasn't lost touch with reality and takes her subjects' daily struggles very seriously. The Duchess of Toussaint is a skilled diplomat who's not afraid to get her hands dirty, and she deserves to have more bards sing her songs.

Cerys an Craite

Skellige's Savior

  • A wise leader who thinks before she acts
  • The obvious choice for the throne

The Skellige Isles are not for the faint of heart. With large forest creatures and ferocious Ice Giants with murderous intent, the region needs a strong ruler with adamant resolve to maintain the natural order of things. Cerys an Craite should have had an even larger role in the story for several reasons.

The Witcher 3: Why the 'King's Gambit' Quest is Biased Towards Cerys

The Kings Gambit quest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one of the most morally straightforward quests in the game though for good reason.

Not only did she help Geralt fight the infamous Hym, but she's also a wise woman who is by far a much better choice to become ruler of Skellige than her hot-headed older brother, Hjalmar.

The Lady Of The Lake

The Gift-Giving Nymph

  • Powerful and kind
  • Gives Geralt a legendary sword

Geralt's monster-hunting quest is never-ending, and as the story progresses, enemies become more and more powerful. To survive the dangers The Continent has in store, it's necessary to continuously upgrade the Witcher's armor, spells, and silver sword. This is where the Lady of the Lake comes in. She appears in the form of a hermit in the middle of a lake during a mission in the Blood and Wine DLC for The Witcher 3. Once Geralt proves himself worthy, the Lady of the Lake reveals herself and gives him the legendary sword Aerondight.

Considering she's such a powerful being who will gladly give an outstanding weapon to whoever's worthy and expect nothing in return, it's safe to say she deserves a lot more praise than she got.

Roach

Geralt's Best Friend

  • Incredibly loyal and has nerves of steel

Exploring The Continent can take a very long time, but with the right mare, the roads can feel considerably shorter. While Geralt has had many Roaches over the years, he's always seemed to love them all the same.

Roach is one of the cornerstones of The Witcher universe and deserves a lot more credit than she gets. Whether the White Wolf needs to travel from Novigrad to Midcopse in record time or slash away at a feral pack of wolves in the middle of an open field, Roach will always be happy to lend a hoof.
