Vanessa Hudgens Shares How Winning ‘The Masked Singer’ Helped Her Grow as a Vocalist

Yeah, I, I think that it was really fulfilling for me because of, like, the win and being anonymous, but also being able to, like, show up to work and, like, work on my God-given gift with a coach, you know, and, like, move through these different kinds of genres from like jazz to rock to pop and just kind of playing with my voice and actually working on my voice and, and growing as a singer. I was like, I get to be paid to do this. Like, this is the dream. Superstar actress, singer, Broadway sensation Vanessa Hogan. I want to jump to High School Musical really quickly, too, because I know you're about to head out. How did the three movies prepare you for this one? And did you feel like you were, I don't know, stepping back into Gabriella's shoes for this? No, you know, I, I grew up doing musical theater. I've been performing since I was literally like four years old and singing professionally since I was like seven. So, you know, I've been doing it almost my entire life. And I think that like, you know, all those, all those hours don't go and disappear. And I got to bring that with me into the work that I constantly do. And this was a really beautiful and fun place to be able to share that. I love that. So it's kind of like, you know, all your years of hard work, including High School Musical, because, you know, your love, your fans still look at you as Gabriella. Sometimes It has prepared you for moments like Bad Boys and. And thereafter. Yeah, of course. I mean, I feel like everything just kind of gives you better understanding and knowledge to then move forward through space with a bit more wisdom. It's like the 10,000 hour rule, you know? You just keep going and it amounts to something. It's my darling. It's incredible that someone so unforgettable. I wanted to know, which song did you sing that was most fulfilling for you? Oh, you know, like I, I really wanted to do the jazz thing. So singing unforgettable was was really fun for me. And like the production they put into that song as well. I watched it back and was just like, Oh my gosh, this is gorgeous. Oh my God. But also like having that like girl female empowerment moment. Singing you ought to know is so much fun too. Just getting to be a little angsty and, and just like honestly working on my voice with like a vocal coach every week was like, I was like, this is the best thing ever. I get to like work on something that I was blessed with and get better at it. Knowing that you had friends and family watching, did you do any like winks or nudges to like let them know? Like I'm thinking about you and who in the family did you actually confide and who gave you the best advice? I mean like my blood, you know, and my man, they knew. But other than that, like nobody. My lips were sealed. But I don't know, I feel like I was so focused on like, giving the best performance that I could because I am my worst critic. And even though, like, I still had a mask on and people didn't know it was me, I know it's me. So I didn't do anything like, outside of the norm other than like trying to get the best performance I could. Bad Boys 4, congratulations. You returned as weapons expert Kelly after making your debut in 2020's Bad Boy for Life. So I got to ask you, what was the biggest challenge for you while filming? I don't know. I mean, I feel like they create such a wonderfully safe and fun environment that like, nothing felt unachievable. You know, it's always fun when we got to do action sequences and prep for those and have like some stunt training and like working with the guns and making sure everyone feels safe. And it's, it's, it's really nice. They they just, they do it right. What's one thing about Will Smith that may shock his fans? I mean, like when, when we would have like big numbers with like a, a big scenes with a lot of extras and a lot of people on set, Will there would be a microphone on set for the AD us to speak to the cast and all the extras and the camera crew. And so everyone's on the same page. Will would take that microphone and just start freestyling and it was always really good. Not surprising, but but he's just, he is that guy.
