Report: 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey missing OTAs isn’t ‘contract related’

report: 49ers rb christian mccaffrey missing otas isn’t ‘contract related’

The San Francisco 49ers have not had superstar running back Christian McCaffrey with them for offseason OTAs, and the reigning Offensive Player of the Year is not expected to join the team at all for the voluntary summer workouts. Since McCaffrey’s current contract has a $200,000 workout bonus, his absence raised some questions about whether he was aiming to receive a new contract after one of the best seasons of his career.

Niners running backs coach Bobby Turner added some fuel to the fire earlier this week when asked about McCaffrey. “Physically,” Turner told NBC Sports Bay Area earlier this week. “Physically he’s not here, but he’s here in every other aspect. That’s the business part, and I’m not getting into that.”

A subsequent report by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, however, seemed to dispel rumors that McCaffrey was missing OTAs in search of a new contract. Granted, even Florio seemed hesitant to say that his contract situation could not lead to some tension down the line.

“Per a source with knowledge of the situation, McCaffrey absence isn’t due to his contract,” Florio wrote. “That doesn’t mean his contract isn’t or won’t be an issue. McCaffrey is due to make $11.8 million this year under the contract the 49ers inherited when trading for him during the 2022 season.”

McCaffrey has two seasons remaining on the four-year, $64 million contract he inked with the Carolina Panthers back in 2020. While his deal has the highest average annual value among active running backs, McCaffrey’s extensive track record of success as a receiver makes it easy to see why he could be dissatisfied with the $11.8 million salary he is scheduled to receive next season, less than what recent free agent wideouts like Darnell Mooney and Gabriel Davis will make.

With Niners receiver Brandon Aiyuk waiting to receive a sizable extension from the team, San Francisco’s decision-making brass has to be concerned about potentially having two top skill players upset with their contracts. However, it seems that any speculation around McCaffrey may be a little preemptive.
