Glen Powell almost 'depleted a bank account' waiting for Tom Cruise to release Top Gun: Maverick in cinemas
Glen Powell has revealed that his breakout role almost drove him to being broke.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the star recalled waiting for the cinematic release of Top Gun: Maverick, which was slated for 2019 but was pushed back to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"I'd never made any significant amount of money on a movie, including Top Gun, and I was depleting a bank account to a point where my accountant was like, 'This pandemic cannot last much longer,'" the actor recalled.
Glen Powell was down to his last buck while Tom Cruise bided his time for the release of Top Gun: Maverick.
The film had many chances to come out on streaming, but it is reported that Tom Cruise, who headlined the movie, refused and held out for a cinematic release.
"Tom was already Tom; I was waiting for my life to change," Powell said.
When it finally hit theatres in May 2022, it grossed $USD 1.5 billion (approx. $2.23 billion) worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing film of 2022, behind Avatar: The Way of the Water.
The flick turned Powell into a breakout star, afterwards enjoying success with Anyone But You, which co-starred Sydney Sweeney and was set in Australia.
But his parents remain unconvinced of his popularity, taking to the red carpet of his latest release, Hit Man, with protest signs.
"STOP TRYING TO MAKE GLEN POWELL HAPPEN," his mum, Cyndy Powell's sign read.
Glen Powell's parents hold up signs behind him as they attend the special screening of Hitman in Texas.
His dad, Glen Powell Sr. held one that read, "IT'S NEVER GONNA HAPPEN," completing the Mean Girls reference.
The actor insisted that the signs were a joke, telling Entertainment Tonight. "Well, my family – always my mom and my dad – are known for kind of trolling me a bit."
The actor explained that his parents got the idea from mean tweets: "I don't read tweets but my parents read tweets – so if you're talking s--t, know that my parents are reading those tweets."
"They thought that was going to be a funny idea so I loved it," he added. "Even though they troll me, they support me in every way."
