Star Wars' Mark Hamill Weighs In on Donald Trump Trial
Donald Trump on January 6, 2018, in Thurmont, Maryland and Mark Hamill on June 19, 2019 in Hollywood, California. Hamill has taken to social media to say the former president is "guilty."
Star Wars actor Mark Hamill has criticized Donald Trump online, saying the former president is "guilty" in his hush money trial.
Trump's defense has officially concluded its case in the first criminal trial of a former president in American history. The jury is scheduled to return next week with its verdict. The businessman has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records involving a $130,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election.
Despite previously saying he would take the stand, Trump didn't testify on his own behalf. After the defense rested, Hamill—best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the iconic sci-fi franchise—shared his thoughts on the decision on X (formerly Twitter), alleging it was because Trump is "guilty."
On May 21, the Star Wars actor reposted a tweet from Representative Eric Swalwell that reads: "Just a reminder: the jury absolutely cannot hold it against Trump for not testifying. BUT YOU CAN. If Trump promised you at a press conference that he'd testify and then doesn't, you should conclude he's guilty as hell."
Hamill added: "[siren emoji] SPOILER ALERT: He's guilty as hell."
Newsweek emailed spokespeople for Hamill and Trump for comment Thursday.
At the time of writing, Hamill's post had been viewed over 620,000 times.
People took to the comments to echo Hamill's sentiment and vilify the former president.
"If I had to count the number of times Mr. Trump said he was going to do something and didn't, or said something that he claimed he never said, I'd need to borrow the US Debt Clock to be accurate," one person wrote.
"Donald Trump is a walking felony! He's the most corrupt politician in modern times," another person alleged.
A third X user added: "What isn't he guilty of at this point? Well said."
Hamill's post has proven to be divisive, as others have come to Trump's defense.
"SPOILER ALERT: it's a rigged fascist show trial and there's NO CRIME," someone commented.
"Mark Hamill really thinks that he is Luke Skywalker," another said.
"we all love and support Trump," a different social media user wrote.
This isn't the first time that Hamill has condemned Trump on X, as he is a vocal critic of the former president. On April 9, he said he would be voting for President Joe Biden in the 2024 election.
"BREAKING: Mark Hamill has announced he will be supporting President Biden over Donald tRump," he wrote.
In May, he posted a series of pro-Biden and anti-Trump political messages that appeared to be in preparation for May 4—a special occasion for Star Wars fans who celebrate it as "May the Fourth" due to a resemblance to the film quote "may the force be with you."
"May The First Not Quench Your Thirst For Biden's Re-election! #BidenHarris2024," Hamill posted on May 1.
"May The Second Biden Administration Be As Productive and Successful As The 1st," he wrote the following day.
"May The Third Be Absurd That The Guy Who Tried To Steal A Fair Election Is Allowed To Run Again," reads Hamill's post from May 3. This was also the same day that he praised Biden as "Joe-bi Wan Kenobi" during a surprise appearance at the White House. The actor arrived to the press conference wearing Biden-supplied sunglasses and hailed the president's legislative track record.
On May 4, he uploaded a photo of himself and the president in the White House with the caption: "May The Fourth Be The Day A Make-Believe Defender Of The Galaxy Met A Real-Life Defender Of Democracy."
