'It could persuade other countries to follow'
Up until now, 139 out of 193 UN member states recognise Palestine as an independent state. But as of today it will be 142 because Spain, Ireland and Norway are all going to formally recognise Palestine as a state in coordinated press announcements. The Israelis, as you'd expect, oppose this. The Foreign Ministry released a video yesterday. Warning Ireland not to be a pawn of Hamas. Largely it is a symbolic move. But there are some practical consequences of it too, and it could persuade other countries potentially to follow France, for example. Emmanuel Macron has previously said that recognising Palestine as a state is not a taboo and so a significant moment.
