Harry Maguire prepared for Man Utd transfer exits this summer - "I know what happens"
Harry Maguire admits "he knows what happens" when Manchester United miss out on their goals as he confessed players will likely get moved on.
The Red Devils centre-half has, like many of his team-mates, seen his campaign hit by injury woes which has left him and the team struggling. Erik ten Hag has just seen United register their worst ever Premier League finish which has resulted in them missing out on European football.
The Dutchman is therefore under scrutiny amid suggestions he might soon be out of a job. A host of the players also know, following a change to the hierarchy, that their time at Old Trafford could be up but Maguire insists it is part and parcel of playing for such a heavyweight club.
He told The Sun: “It is what happens when you play for this club. If you don’t get good results, players get scrutinised, players get linked with a move away. They get sold, put on the transfer list and the manager will come under pressure. I have been here five years now so I know what happens. The manager is experienced enough to know it is part and parcel of being at this club. I am sure he can deal with that."
Ineos chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe has come on board to run the club's football operations and has begun making wholesale changes off the pitch. He's now tipped to make a difference to the squad in what is his first summer transfer window.
Last term United finished third and won the Carabao Cup with many people expecting them to push on after Ten Hag landed more signings. However they've endured a steep decline with the manager often putting that down to a raft of injuries, but Maguire still admits more should've been achieved.
He said: “It has been a really disappointing season from where we were a year ago. Everyone will admit that. Obviously, we have had a ridiculous number of injuries, a freak number. We have not dealt with it well enough. We should have managed more points than what we did. We have not performed well enough and our performances should have been better.
the Red Devils set numerous unwanted records, including most losses in a Premier League season
“Obviously, Europe is something we need to push towards. It would be a great achievement to win the Cup against a team who are playing really well.”
United can salvage their season with a win over Manchester City in the FA Cup this weekend. Victory at Wembley would see the Red Devils qualify for Europe next season after they missed out as a result of their league position. Last season they met their neighbours in the FA Cup final but lost 2-1 and will go in as huge underdogs with Pep Guardiola's side looking to land the double.
