Coalition trying to ‘look tough’ on immigration ahead of next election
Former Labor senator Stephen Conroy says the Liberals are “pretending they are doing something tough” on immigration but they are “not really”.
The Opposition wants to cut net overseas migration from 260,000 in 2024-25, which the government is projecting, to 160,000.
“They want to talk tough on this but they also didn’t do anything about it in government,” Mr Conroy said.
“They knew that they couldn’t do anything about it in government because it was too severe a consequence for the economy but they want to look tough between now and the next election.”
