The league stage of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 ended on Sunday (May 19), with the match between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) getting washed out. The fans are now eagerly waiting for the start of the playoffs. The first qualifier and the eliminator will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium on May 21 and 22, respectively.
From Ahmedabad, the action will move to Chennai. The city will host the second qualifier and the final on May 24 and 26, respectively. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will lock horns in the first qualifier. The winning team will make it to the final while the losing side will get one more chance.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) will lock horns in the eliminator. The winning team will have to win one more game to qualify for the final while the losing side will crash out.

First things first, the teams finishing in the top two have an advantage and they get two chances to qualify for the final. Before IPL 2011, the BCCI tweaked rules and introduced the playoff system. Under this rule, the teams in the top two were given an advantage.
Earlier, the top four teams used to play semi-finals. The BCCI decided to reward the teams finishing in the top two. The team winning the first qualifier, which is played between the top two teams, directly qualifies for the final. The losing side gets one more chance and plays the winning side of the eliminator.

As the name suggests, the losing side of the eliminator gets 'eliminated'. The winning team stays in the hunt and faces the losing side of the first qualifier. The winner of the eliminator also has to win the second qualifier to make it to the final.

Sunrisers Hyderabad is the only team in IPL's history to win the title after playing the eliminator. The David Warner-led side defeated KKR in the eliminator and Gujarat Lions in the second qualifier to make it to the final. The Orange Army defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final to lift the trophy for the first time.
