Greggs is launching its first ever fish finger sandwich - find out if your local store has them in stock

Greggs is adding what will no doubt become a fan favourite to its menu on May 23 - but not everyone will be able to try the new offering as it is only launching in 10 stores for now.

The new item is a quintessential British classic - the fish finger sandwich (which will also be available as a wrap).

Customers local to selected shops across the northeast - including Gateshead, Newcastle and Sunderland -  will be the first to get their hands on the new launch.

A childhood staple, the Fish Finger Sandwich (from £3.90) will be available with a choice of either ketchup or mayo, and is made from a lightly battered cod fillet fish, dressed with iceberg lettuce inside a soft-corned top roll.

Those looking for a twist on the classic can try the Fish Finger Wrap (from £3.70). Also made with a cod fillet, it features mixed leaves, cucumber and mayonnaise, encased in a tortilla wrap.

Comedian and presenter Rosie Ramsey from South Shields opened up the Finest Catch by Greggs - a mobile seaside fish and chip shop, to announce the launch

Both items will be available to order from the counter and as part of Greggs' hot sandwich deal - which includes any hot sandwich, Southern Fried Potato Wedges or Side Salad, with any cold drink from £4.95. 

The Fish Finger Sandwich and Fish Finger Wrap join the existing made-to-order range which currently includes a range of burgers and wraps.

These include the Mayo Crispy Chicken Burger, Spicy Crispy Chicken Burger, Sweet Chilli Chicken Wrap, Hot & Spicy Chicken Wrap and Classic Mayo Chicken Wrap.

The new range will be trialled in 10 shops, and then added to a further 10 across the northeast region in June, before a potential national roll out later this year.

To announce its new options, Greggs opened a mobile seaside fish and chip shop on Whitley Bay's promenade at the weekend,

Wrapped entirely in vintage Greggs newspaper, the Finest Catch by Greggs store was launched by South Shields presenter and comedian, Rosie Ramsey.

The star sported a Greggs branded uniform, serving customers through the hatch as they queued along the seafront.

The pop-up gave customers an exclusive opportunity to sample the new items, (which were wrapped in classic newspaper-style packaging) ahead of the official launch.

Foodies also had the chance to relax in the sunshine in canopy-style deck chairs as they enjoyed Greggs' twist on a British classic.

This comes after the FTSE 250 group bakery, famous for its sausage rolls, reported a 7.4 per cent rise in like-for-like sales for the first 19 weeks of 2024.

The Newcastle-based company recently hit a milestone with 2,500 shops trading nationwide, as it steams ahead with a target of 3,500 locations.

Greggs told investors on Tuesday it is 'confident' it will open 140 to 160 new stores this year.

In a statement, Greggs said: 'We have made a good start to the year with continued like-for-like growth in a challenging market, reflecting the strength of our strategic plan'.
