Rajkummar Rao was replaced overnight by a star kid: ‘It wasn't fair'

Rajkummar Rao recounted his experience of being replaced in a film overnight during a conversation with Karan Johar and 'Mr and Mrs Mahi' co-star Janhvi Kapoor. During the chat, Karan Johar claimed that many successful people talk about being 'victimised like an outsider' to 'make headlines'. To that, Rao recalled his own experience.

During the chat, which is available on Dharma Productions' YouTube channel, Karan Johar claimed, "Sometimes they are using it as a tool to make headlines. Immensely successful people are saying, 'Oh I felt victimised like an outsider and lost opportunity to a star kid'. Somebody is saying, 'I didn't attend a party so I didn't get a role.' I don't know at which party there has been transactions for films."

To this, Rajkummar Rao recalled, "When I came to Mumbai, even I was told that 'you have to attend parties.' Making contacts is not a problem, but going to a party and say, 'Hi I am here to make contact.' But having said that, I was supposed to do a film, but then suddenly I was not in that film overnight. Somebody who is known and happened to be a star kid got that part. In my mind, I think it was not fair."

Earlier, in an exclusive interview with IndiaToday.In, Rao had opened up about the judgements he faced when he started out in the industry. He said, "Apart from being replaced, a lot of people would often see me in a certain way. Because I came from a small town, they looked at me in a certain way. They would even question how I could be a lead actor in a film."

However, Rajkummar Rao added that like a coin, the film industry also had another side to offer to him. He shared with a smile, "But there were also people who would say, 'Oh you come from a small town, you are an outsider, but we will make you a lead actor'."

Rajkummar Rao will next be seen in 'Mr and Mrs Mahi'alongside Janhvi Kapoor. The film will release in theatres on May 31.
