Casting director Shruti Mahajan says Sharmin Segal is the right choice for 'Heeramandi': 'She went through multiple rounds of auditions and look tests'
Sharmin Segal, who is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's niece, faced criticism for her performance in ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’ as a certain section of the audience felt that she did not live up to the character and labelled it as 'expressionless'. Casting director Shruti Mahajan has finally come out in support of Sharmin, justifying how much she has done for the movie.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Shruti said that Sharmin is the right choice for the role and the trolling is truly unfair. Shruti added that many people liked her character in this film but everyone always wants to talk about the negative as the mind likes to attract negative thoughts. She is sure that Sharmin has given her 100 percent to the character and her hard work for the character should be appreciated.

Meanwhile, some also criticized that Sharmin got the role only because she is the niece of SLB, not because of talent. People found it an example of nepotism. But Shruti clarified that Sharmin had to face multiple auditions and tests before getting the role. Sharmin was presented as Alamzeb, the daughter of Mallikajaan, played by Manisha Koirala.
She added that the process there was just like other actors. According to Shruti, many liked Sharmin's voice and acting and realized that she looks fresh and brings newness to the cast. The ongoing criticism that she doesn’t belong to the world of Heeramandi or courtesans is what Bhansali briefed her on.
Heeramandi features Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Fardeen Khan, Taha Shah Badussha, Shekhar Suman, and Adhyayan Suman in key roles.
