Liverpool transfer news: 10 players leave Anfield but defender exit hits snag

The start of July has brought some high-profile Liverpool exits, but still no new arrivals.

Arne Slot has set about his new job at Anfield after arriving from Feyenoord, but the manager has not rushed into new signings. Transfer svengalis Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes will have a fair amount of sway on that front, as the post-Klopp era begins.

A number of members of the Reds' squad have been away at Euro 2024, with Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo in action for The Netherlands against Romania on Tuesday. Others at the tournament have been linked with a move to Merseyside, including England winger Anthony Gordon.

With more than three weeks to go until Liverpool's first pre-season friendly, there is plenty of time to get deals over the line. Here are Mirror Football's latest lines from around Anfield.

Matip among 10 to leave

Liverpool have confirmed the departure of 10 players, including senior stars Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara. Centre-back Matip and midfielder Thiago had their exits announced earlier in the year, with their contracts expiring at the end of June, but the news is now official.

The others to leave include Adam Lewis, Melkamu Frauendorf and Mateusz Musialowski, all of whom featured under Jurgen Klopp after playing for Liverpool's academy sides. German youth international Frauendorf already has a new club, with the 20-year-old joining Hannover in his homeland.

Liverpool's list of 10 departures is rounded out by five more academy talents. Nathan Giblin, Francis Gyimah, Luke Hewitson, Niall Osborne and Cody Pennington are the others to depart.

Reds enter Ugarte race

Liverpool could rival Manchester United for Manuel Ugarte, according to the player's agent. The Uruguay international only joined Paris Saint-Germain from Sporting CP last summer but could find himself on the move again.

"Liverpool? There is a lot of talk but it is not the only club, there are others. There are many possibilities on the table," agent Jorge Chijane told O Jogo.

"It's almost certain that he won't stay (at PSG), it's sure he'll leave," he added. "I believe the situation will be resolved." Ugarte is currently away with Uruguay at the Copa America, starting all three group games as Marcelo Bielsa's team topped their group.

Van den Berg deal delayed

Mainz sporting director Christian Heidel has explained the delay in getting a deal over the line for Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg. The Dutch youngster impressed on loan at the Bundesliga side last term, and they remain keen on a permanent switch.

"We’re waiting. We’ve been in contact with Liverpool several times," Heidel told Fussball Transfers when reflecting on the future of the 22-year-old.

"When Liverpool starts training, there won’t be a central defender there because they’re all spread out at the European Championships and the Copa America and then they want to take a look and take their time."
