Kanpur family gets Rs 3.9 lakh electricity bill for using cooler, fridge

A family living in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur has been served an electricity bill amounting to nearly four lakh rupees. An official from the electriticy department clarified that the inflated bill was due to a technical glitch.

The electricity bill for Chandrashekhar's house was on hold for four to five months, but when he approached the local electricity department, he was shocked to see a bill amounting to Rs 3.9 lakh

When India Today TV spoke to Chandrashekhar, it was learnt that the man lives with his family in a kutcha house that had a tin shade.Chandrashekar and his family were using only one cooler, one refrigerator and two fans at his house.

Kanpur Electricity Supply Company (Kesco)media in-charge Srikant Rangeela said that the matter was known to the electricity department officials, and it had happened due to some technical glitch in the calculating system.

"Due to the changes made to the server of Kesco, some of the electricity meters have developed technical fault, due to which correct data could not be registered", Rangeela added, while assuring that soon the consumer's problem will be resolved, and he will not have to pay such a huge bill.
