Red tide toxin detected in Bohol, Surigao waters

MANILA, Philippines — The coastal waters in some parts of the Visayas and Mindanao have tested positive for algae that produces the red tide toxin, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources

The BFAR said the coastal waters of Dauis and Tagbilaran in Bohol contained paralytic shellfish poison beyond the regulatory limit.

Aside from Bohol, red tide toxin was also detected in Dumanquillas Bay in Surigao del Sur as well as in the municipal waters of San Benito in Surigao del Norte.

Consumption, transport and sale of any type of shellfish as well as alamang harvested from these areas are prohibited, the BFAR said.

Fish, squid, shrimps and crabs are safe for consumption provided these are fresh, washed thoroughly and their internal organs removed before cooking.
