The Los Angeles Lakers are actively exploring trade options for four of their role players as they look to reshape their roster for the upcoming season. With 14 of their 15 roster spots currently filled, the Lakers need to make moves to accommodate new talent.
According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, the Lakers are considering trading starting point guard D’Angelo Russell, forward Jarred Vanderbilt, guard Gabe Vincent, and starting power forward Rui Hachimura. Russell has picked up his $18.7 million player option, while Vanderbilt, Vincent, and Hachimura are set to earn $10.7 million, $11 million, and $17 million respectively in the 2024-25 season. Losing Vanderbilt and Vincent, the team’s only plus defenders on the wing, would likely be a move to bring in healthier perimeter defenders.
The Lakers are aiming to catch up with the Western Conference's top teams. The Dallas Mavericks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Denver Nuggets are all strong contenders. The L.A. Clippers, despite losing Paul George to the Philadelphia 76ers and committing $70 million to James Harden over the next two seasons, have likely fallen behind the Lakers. Meanwhile, the New Orleans Pelicans and Memphis Grizzlies have made improvements, and the Sacramento Kings remain a significant threat.
Teams like the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, and Golden State Warriors are expected to be competitive as play-in contenders. The Lakers recognize that running back the same roster from last season won’t be enough. They need upgrades at the point guard position, along the wing defensively, and possibly in the frontcourt alongside Anthony Davis.
Trading any of the four mentioned players, aside from Hachimura, could be challenging due to their mid-tier contracts. However, the Lakers are determined to make the necessary moves to strengthen their team for the 2024-25 season.
