McDonald’s Is Bringing a Global Fan-Favorite to the U.S. For the First Time Ever

But it won't be around long.

By now, you probably already know that we’re a little obsessed with McDonald’s restaurants in other countries. The fact that some Mickey D’s locations sell mozzarella sticks and Coke floats makes us extremely jealous—and let’s not even talk about the beloved Snack Wrap, which is still being offered in the U.K.

Over the years, McDonald’s has slowly brought global fan-favorites to the states—like the U.K.’s Chicken Big Mac and even the Canadian Squishmallow Happy Meal Toys that broke the internet. Now, Mickey D’s is bringing a Japanese staple stateside for the first time ever.

Beginning July 9, McDonald’s is adding Special Grade Garlic Sauce to the menu. The new McNugget dipping sauce is inspired by the Black Garlic Sauce found at the Golden Arches in Japan.

McDonald's Introduces Special Grade Garlic Sauce

The sauce has a savory base of garlic and soy sauce notes with a hint of tangy sweetness. It’s the first-ever garlic sauce available in U.S. McDonald’s restaurants.

The new Special Grade Garlic Sauce cups will also draw inspiration from Japan with eight unique designs from the popular manga series “Jujutsu Kaisen.” Each cup features one of eight characters: Mahito, Sukuna, Geto, Gojo, Yuji, Nobara, Megumi, and Nanami.

Mickey D’s has been leaning into manga and anime culture recently. In February, the fast food chain introduced WcDonald’s sauce inspired by the McDonald’s look-alike restaurant seen in many anime shows and movies, aptly called “WcDonald’s.” Each purchase that includes the Special Grade Garlic Sauce will also receive a free 30-day trial for Crunchyroll, where you can stream “Jujutsu Kaisen” episodes.

McDonald's

McDonald’s Special Grade Garlic Sauce is available at restaurants nationwide for a limited time. However, the catch is you have to order via the McDonald’s app to try it. The Special Grade Garlic Sauce is available for free with any McNugget purchase or as an add-on side to your go-to meal for a couple of cents.

It may only be sauce for now, but we’d say it’s a step in the right direction to getting more international menu items stateside soon.
