Waleed Aly shocks co-stars with 'fart smelling' claim on The Project: 'I'm not making this up'

Waleed Aly left his co-stars on The Project speechless on Tuesday evening following a special report on 'smell training'.

Smell training is a form of therapy that involves training a patient's nose through regular exposure to a range of odours in order to improve their ability to correctly identify and differentiate between scents.

It's being used to help decrease the symptoms of dementia in those suffering with the disease.

'The ability for scents to trigger memories has long been proven,' noted co-host Sarah Harris in a special investigation.

The TV veteran went on to explain that a declining sense of smell could be indicative of mental deterioration, and training the nose with scents like citrus, coffee and more could slow down the process.

Following the report, Aly stunned the show's panel with the results of a study.

'What you really should be smelling are farts. I’m not making this up!' he said.

'They did experiments in mice and found that smelling farts might help protect the braincells against ageing, as well as kidney disease and dementia,'

Sarah Harris appeared appalled by the claim, before gleefully announcing, 'Dutch ovens for dementia!'

It comes after Harris told her co-hosts that she once dropped her mic down the loo seconds before she was due live on air.

'I have dropped my mic in the toilet, this was minutes before the very first time I filled in for the queen, Sandra Sully, and read the news in Sydney,' Sarah explained.

'I had five minutes to use the bathroom and had these mic packs on and racing to do the last nervous wee before the bulletin,' she went on.

'I popped my pants down and heard a plop, plop,' Sarah continued.

Following the toilet debacle, Sarah's crew was less than impressed.

Luckily, it all worked out in the end and the live cross went ahead as planned despite her panic.
