Why garage snacks and drinks are MORE EXPENSIVE

why garage snacks and drinks are more expensive

Garage-bought snacks and drinks can be more expensive than buying the same items from a grocery store or supermarket.

You might pay R1 to R5 for a chips packet from a taxi rank vendor, but R6 to R8 for the same thing from a garage.

Why are you paying slightly higher prices at gas stations?

The South African had a closer look at the pricing of snacks and drinks, and how consumers can get better deals.

Why are garage drinks and snacks pricier

Garages are also called ‘gas stations’.

You could pay R5 for something at the gas station, however, could get the same thing for R2 or R3 at a supermarket.

The price difference usually isn’t massive, but it’s enough for you to notice that you’re paying more.

Why?

Even Reddit users have asked about the differences in pricing.

Gas stations are conveniently located, usually between roads and grocery stores. You could pay a few rands less for that Reboost or Switch somewhere else, however, you’d have to walk somewhere else.

A gas station lets you pay for quick convenience, often closer to a taxi, or when other stores might have closed for the day.

Why garages can do this

A garage charges more than spaza stores and supermarkets because they purchase different quantities, usually at more regular intervals. It’s about buying power, and not just about charging consumers more cash for no reason.

Gas station pricing is often still fair, however, and you’re paying more for the ‘right here and now’ convenience factor.

If you have to buy bread or chips at 22:00, gas stations are easier – and priced for this.

Getting the better deal

Gas station prices are higher, but consumers can still get a better deal and cheaper purchases.

Buy items that are on special promotion, such as combinations of sweets or pies-with-a-drink. Sometimes it’s cheaper than buying the individual items on their own.

Buy with a card where possible: loyalty cards have special promotions and loyalty points, which means that you’ll pay less for your shopping.

Choose your nearest garage, however, also check out what other stores are selling.

Buy larger items (e.g. 250g sugar), because cheaper ones can be more expensive when they’re measured by weight.
