Caribbean Islands hit hard as Hurricane Beryl strengthens into Category 5 storm
Hurricane Barrel made landfall in Grenada on Monday after wreaking havoc on the Caribbean islands. Authorities say the storm has strengthened into a potentially catastrophic Category 5. Extreme sustained wind speeds of 150 mph have been reported on the island of Cariaku. One person has died. Grenada and Saint Vincent have seen roofs torn off of houses and power cuts across the islands. Flights and events across the region have been cancelled. Meteorologists say the quick strengthening of the storm from tropical depression into major hurricane is unprecedented. Jamaica has issued a hurricane warning as Beryl approaches. The last hurricane of similar strength in the Caribbean was Hurricane Ivan, killing dozens of people in Grenada 20 years ago.
