Anthony Gordon post-Euros plan drawn up as Newcastle ‘hold private Liverpool belief’
Newcastle United reportedly view Liverpool's attempt to sign Anthony Gordon as opportunistic - and plan to shower the forward with affection when he returns from England duty.
The English winger might be donning his national colours at Euro 2024 this summer, but his club future was cast into uncertainty after the Magpies had to address a £60million shortfall in their books. Failure to do so could have led to a points deduction, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Negotiations between Newcastle and Liverpool over the 23-year-old took place but ultimately fell through after the Merseyside outfit couldn't meet Newcastle's valuation, as per Telegraph Sport.
Even though Arne Slot's team never officially tabled an offer, Gordon was reportedly swayed by the interest from his childhood club, leaving Newcastle concerned about his mindset ahead of pre-season training later this month.
Gordon previously forced a move away from Everton to secure a £45million switch to Newcastle last year, and pressuring another club to sell him within a year and a half would undoubtedly tarnish his standing with his current club.
However, the Magpies are planning to rally behind him upon his return from the European Championships and will reportedly urge fans to do the same after the 23-year-old missed out on his dream transfer.
The same report suggests that Newcastle have privately questioned the seriousness of Liverpool's interest in signing the winger, suspecting it was opportunistic due to Newcastle's vulnerable position before selling Yankuba Minteh (£33million) and Elliot Anderson (£35million) to Brighton and Nottingham Forest respectively.

Despite Gordon's desire to join his boyhood club, Newcastle, now financially stable, don't anticipate a deal being revived. Liverpool reportedly considered offering either Joe Gomez or Jarrel Qaunsah as part of the deal, but the cash on offer wasn't enough to tempt Newcastle into a sale.
Speculation about a potential deal could intensify once Gordon returns from England duty, with over two months left in the summer transfer window. However, Newcastle are keen to retain the former Everton winger and don't expect further talks with Liverpool for now.
