'People from my state limit themselves': Riyan Parag wants to inspire cricketers from Assam

NEW DELHI: All-rounder Riyan Parag, a standout player for Rajasthan Royals in this year’s edition of Indian Premier League, is set to make his debut with Team India in the upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe.

Parag, the first player from Assam to earn a national call-up, aims to inspire cricketers from his state to aspire for bigger achievements.

The series, starting on July 6 at the Harare Sports Club, also features Shubman Gill as the skipper, with the Indian team led by National Cricket Academy (NCA) head VVS Laxman. Gill will join the squad directly from the United States.

Riyan Parag spoke to ESPNCricinfo about his ambition to change the mindset of people from Assam, wishing to set a roadmap for aspiring cricketers from his state.

He stated, “I feel that people from my state limit themselves from thinking big. I want to change that. I want to play for the country, and once I do, people will see that they can have a pathway to the national team, even from a small state like Assam.”

Reflecting on his journey and breakthrough IPL season, Parag attributed his success to hard work and determination. “During the 2023 IPL season, I worked hard to improve my game. I went out of my comfort zone, training at the Rajasthan Royals Academy in tough conditions. That dedication paid off,” he said.

Parag's performance in both the IPL and domestic cricket has been notable. He scored 573 runs in 16 IPL matches with an average of 52.09 and a strike rate of over 149. His batting consistency was key to helping RR reach the playoffs. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he accumulated 510 runs in 10 games, averaging 85.00 with a strike rate of 182.79.

Addressing the challenges he faced, including online trolling and criticism, Parag discussed his approach to overcoming them. “I decided to shut down the noise and focus on my game. I realized that I couldn’t change everyone’s opinion of me, but I could control my performance and dedication,” he said.

Parag also credited RR head coach Kumar Sangakkara and skipper Sanju Samson for the support they provided. “Sangakkara made things easier for me. He was always approachable and keen on my development. Sanju bhaiyya and I have become very close. He trusted me to be part of the leadership group, which boosted my confidence,” Parag said.
