Migori: Senior Police officer dies after accidentally shooting self while handing over firearm

On Monday evening, July 1, Kuria East OCPD James Mugo accidentally shot himself in the right thigh while carrying out safety precautions within the station, according to a police statement witnessed by TUKO.co.ke.
"A report was made by an officer NO 228594 CPL Caudence Nyangenya the charge lines and armoury that while issuing a Barreta pistol to a junior officer and while carrying out safety precautions the senior officer accidentally shot himself injuring his right leg thigh exiting on the right bottom," the report read in part.
The officer is said to have discharged one round of 9mm from a Barreta pistol. Mugo was rushed to Kegonga sub-county hospital and later referred to Migori County Hospital in critical condition for further treatment where was pronounced dead on arrival due to severe bleeding.
The body of the officer is preserved at the Migori County referral hospital awaiting autopsy.
"The officer was rushed to Kegonga Sub County Hospital and later referred to Migori County Hospital for further treatment in serious condition. On arrival, he was pronounced dead due to excessive bleeding. The body is preserved at the same hospital morgue awaiting autopsy," added the statement.
