Netflix fans go wild as mid-2000s hit lands on streaming platform

Netflix kicked off the month adding a popular noughties series millions of viewers will be sure to add to their summer streaming schedule. The streaming service has added a popular show that ran for 121 episodes on a top American network for six seasons between 2004–2010, garnering 10 Primetime Emmys along the way.

The adventure fantasy centers around the aftermath of a plane crash on a deserted island, and how the survivors work with one another in its wake. The series was a mainstream hit while developing a cult following with TV viewers that remains 14 years since its initial run ended.

Netflix on Monday teased the addition to its library to its 22.5 million X/ Twitter followers with a series of numbers that hold significance to the storyline of the series. The series in question is Lost, the hit ABC show that J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof and Jeffrey Lieber created, which is also available on Hulu.

Netflix and Disney in 2023 reached a pact to jointly stream certain shows, which includes Lost as well as the hit ABC series Grey's Anatomy, according to Variety. Netflix in 2009 agreed to a pact with Disney/ABC for streaming rights to the show, which Hulu reobtained exclusive rights to in 2018, the outlet reported.

The storyline of the series centered around the people who survived a crash on a plane headed from Sydney to Los Angeles. The cast of the series includes Jorge Garcia, Josh Holloway, Yunjin Kim, Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly, Daniel Dae Kim, Terry O'Quinn, Naveen Andrews, Michael Emerson, Dominic Monaghan and Ken Leung.

The numbers included in the initial tweet - 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42 - had multiple meanings in relation to the show.

They referenced lottery numbers Garcia's character Hugo 'Hurley' Reyes played; atomic numbers; and numerals in an equation that foretold 'a bad omen,' according to the outlet.

A number of fans took to social media to celebrate the news, with one calling the series the 'BEST TV SHOW OF ALL TIME' while another said the news hit them with a 'Nostalgia Wave.'

One fan predicted the series might frustrate a new generation of viewers with its twists and turns. 'A bunch of Gen Z is going to watch this for the first time and get mega frustrated when they realize halfway through that the show runners have no idea what they are doing,' the user said.

A number of viewers referred to the controversial conclusion of the series, which initially aired as a two-part finale on May 23, 2010. 'This show had the most wild ending,' one user said. 'Kind of liked it kind of did not.'

Said another, 'I’ve watched every series way back and I’m still lost with the actual outcome great series it was.' One user advised, 'Just stop watching before the last show and pretend they took it off.'
