Well-heeled guests pull out all the style stops as they don glamorous gowns and floral frocks to attend day one of the Henley Royal Regatta - despite the grey skies and drizzle

Chic revellers were snapped stepping out in style today, as they attended day one of the Henley Royal Regatta at Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire.

The rowing event, which was established in 1839, takes place every year and sees teams compete in multiple races along the Thames. Clubs from up and down the country will vye for glory as they take part in some 300 competitions.

However, it is as famous for its fashion as it is for its rowing, and attendees today certainly seemed keen to maintain that reputation.

They certainly didn't let the less-than-ideal weather conditions affect their style, with some seen keeping their outfits protected from the drizzle with large umbrellas.

There are two sections at the event - the Regatta Enclosure and the Stewards' Enclosure.

According to event information, there is no dress code in the Regatta Enclosure and 'the atmosphere is informal and relaxed'.

However, the website notes, many attendees 'do embrace the spirit of the event by wearing club blazers and other rowing apparel'.

Meanwhile, the Stewards' Enclosure is more formal, and event organisers have devised a dress code.

When it comes to the ladies, they are 'required to wear dresses or skirts with a hemline below the knee, or jackets or blazers with trousers, or trouser suits'.

In addition, while it not a requirement, it is 'customary for ladies to wear hats'.

Some items of clothing are banned from the enclosure, including shorts, leggings, tracksuits and jeans.

The gentlemen's dress code cites that men are 'required to wear lounge suits, or jackets or blazers with trousers, together with a tie or, if preferred, a cravat'.

Again, shorts, leggings, tracksuits and jeans are all listed as banned garments when it comes to the Stewards' Enclosure.
