Kaizer Chiefs can sign R20 million valued former favourite this winter
Kaizer Chiefs might be tempted to bring one of their former favourites home this winter. His future abroad looks uncertain all of a sudden.
Carnell sacked by MLS side St. Louis City
Bradley Carnell has been relieved of his duties as head coach of MLS side St. Louis City. The former Chiefs, Stuttgart, Borussia Monchengladbach and SuperSport star was appointed as head coach of St. Louis in January 2022.
Former Chiefs midfield general Njabulo Blom arrived in the MLS at the end of 2022. He struggled to hold down a place initially but gradually got into his stride, becoming a mainstay in the centre of the park. Now, however, there is some doubt over his status at the club. Carnell pushed to sign the Amakhosi youth product and with the coach gone, Blom might be considering his options. The 24-year-old’s contract expires in December of this year, but the club has a two-year extension option. The player has only made 11 appearances out of 20 in the Western Conference this term.
Kaizer Chiefs homecoming on the cards?
Njabulo Blom was a regular part of the furniture in his first season stateside. However, with only 11 league appearances from 20 this time around, his first-team status isn’t quite as secure. Now, with the dismissal of his compatriot Bradley Carnell, even more doubts over his future with St. Louis will emerge.
The 24-year-old’s contract expires in December of this year, but the club has a two-year extension option. He switched to the MLS in the final days of 2022 for a reported €300k (R6 million). His updated value, according to transfermarkt, is €1m, around R20 million. The club could most certainly do a deal for Blom for considerably less than R20 million if they play their cards right.

Chiefs midfield numbers are looking thin
Siyethemba Sithebe has been released while Samkelo Zwane is likely to be loaned out. That leaves Yusuf Maart and Edson Castillo as the current central midfield options. A move for Blom seems like a no-brainer if Amakhosi top brass can pull it off. New boss Nasreddine Nabi should also join the club soon after overseeing his final match as head coach of FAR Rabat, who lost the Throne Cup final against Raja Casablanca.
