Paramedic who fell asleep at the wheel says he was on 18-hour shift
The paramedic involved in this crash has said that what his employer, Ambulance Victoria, has delivered him in the last 24 hours amounts to a sucker punch. He says having been a paramedic for 23 years and now being made out to be a liar is deeply distressing. Yeah, I was really disappointed, frustrated, angry. Saddened by it, he is detailed to 9 News about how after working an 18 and 1/2 hour shift on the road. He ended up upside down in the driver's seat after falling asleep at the wheel. The accident shook me up itself, but then I think the treatment post. Post that the ambulance union has accused Ambulance Victoria of gaslighting this employee and overworking its paramedics. Someone's nearly lost their life in the course of their work and AV come out in gaslight them. It's just pathetic. Ambulance Victoria has issued an apology to Jim, saying their initial response to his claims about this story was wrong. Was on the wrong. Tone and that they acknowledge the length of time that he worked and that this is distressing. Yeah, I certainly acknowledge that and certainly acknowledge the statement that was made yesterday has caused some distress and that was absolutely not the intent and absolutely apologise for any distress that's been caused. They have said he is now on leave. They're also investigating what happened that night and how it was that he was required to work for 18 1/2 hours. Saying that there will be a memo sent out to all paramedics today about fatigue. And how they are to deal with this on the job.
