Delhi has the largest green cover in India, says AAP | Claim vs reality
Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore. Sabse Jada Green cover Dilli Main finding it difficult to believe these claims? Well, you are not alone. The Delhi government has announced plans for planting a whopping 64,00,000 plants in 2024. Moreover, the Kejriwal government claimed that Delhis green cover has risen from 19% to 23%, making it the greenest city per capita in India. If Delhi is becoming a green haven, why does it not feel like it? More importantly, where are the 2,00,00,000 plus new trees? We went on the ground to locate them. Delhi government held one Mahotsav celebrations in all six parliamentary constituencies of Delhi in 2023. We visited three of these locations. Here's what we found. No new trees except this one Lone Tree planted by Gopal Rai himself. The train was seen clinging to dear life in Delhi, sweltering heat. But what about the rest? We were told that the saplings were distributed to people attending the event to plant at their homes. Arvind Kejriwal also launched the Green Action Plan portal. Is Kelly ajo apne dekha grain action plan portal launch wire jobi bibha laga usko upload karega or E jaga baat karke isko monitor kiya JA sapta hai kya kya suya. This is the same portal one year down the line. Incomplete data and no locations or pictures of trees planted were available. Furthermore, the Delhi government claimed that the audit reports on the survival rates of trees would be available on the portal. But no surprise here, no audit reports after 2019. The government claims around 60 to 70% survival rate for saplings planted and is aiming to increase it to 90% in 2024. Questions arise on how the government is calculating survival rates when there are no audit reports and the plants were distributed to the public. The AAM Aadmi Party has still publicized the drive and claims it helped bring down the Delhis pollution. Now the government is aiming to plant another 64,00,000 saplings in 2024. But questions remain. Will we ever see the results when Delhi is facing adverse effects of climate change? Delhi government is busy promoting Delhi as greener than New York and London.
