Ravi Shastri hailed India’s intelligent ploy in the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa to break their momentum during the chase.

With South Africa needing 26 off 24, Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant summoned the team physio to tend to his knee that caused a brief delay in proceedings.

Moments later, India were able to pick up the all-important wicket of Heinrich Klaasen, who was in brilliant form in the game.

Klaasen’s dismissal turned the tied in India’s favour.

Shastri, who was on air during Pant’s on-field treatment, remarked, “India doing everything possible, even slow down the game so that they can break the rhythm of these two explosive batters.”

The ‘ploy’ also grabbed the attention of users on social media.

One wrote, “A perfect move to slow down the game, the game changed after this break only + saved the timer between the overs.”

Another posted, “Also Pant slowing down the play before the Klaasen wicket. Street smart.”

A user chimed in, “So apparently Rishabh Pant delayed the game by getting his knee plastered just before the ball that Klaasen got out on.”

“A few years from now people won’t understand the importance of this break, can’t thank Pant enough for pulling up a muscle just at the right time,” commented another social media user.

Klaasen was in top form, having played a blistering knock of 26-ball 52 when Pant called for the physio before the start of the 17th over.

Once the game resumed, Klaasen was sent packing by Hardik Pandya on the very first ball of the 17th over.

Pandya rolled his fingers and went wide towards the off stump to keep the ball out of Klassen’s arc. The South African wicketkeeper threw his hands at the delivery but could only get an outside edge. The deflected ball was then caught by Pant near his waist, resulting in Klaasen’s dismissal for 52.

This moment was followed by another crucial wicket of David Miller in the final over. Pandya was once again on the bowling duty and it was Suryakumar Yadav who completed a sensational catch that made the wicket all the more special.

India eventually won the game by seven runs to seal their second T20 World Cup crown.
