NEW DELHI: Babar Azam is slated to play under the captaincy of fellow opener and wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan for Vancouver Knights in GT20 Canada 2024.
Rizwan, who gained captaincy experience as the skipper of Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), brings his leadership skills to this new role, reported ANI.
"Hear ye, hear ye! The Vancouver Knights have chosen their captain for GT20 Season 4: Sir @iMRizwanPak! With his mighty batting skills and sharp wicketkeeping, he's ready to lead our charge to victory. Prepare for battle, Knights," Vancouver Knights said while announcing Rizwan as the skipper of the franchise.
Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir and middle-order batter Asif Ali will join Babar and Rizwan in the Vancouver Knights squad for GT20 Canada 2024.
The team also features international talent such as New Zealand's Michael Rippon, South Africa's Dwaine Pretorius, Namibia's Ruben Trumpelmann, and Guyana's Jeremy Gordon.
After their disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup, where Pakistan failed to advance past the group stage, both Rizwan and Babar will aim to regain their form in the upcoming GT20 tournament.
In the T20 World Cup, Babar managed 122 runs in four matches at an average of 40.66, but his strike rate of 101.66 drew criticism from fans and former cricketers alike.
Similarly, Rizwan had a subdued tournament, scoring 110 runs at an average of 36.66 with a strike rate of 90.90.
Pakistan's campaign in the T20 World Cup ended with losses to the USA and India, despite winning their remaining two matches.
The GT20 Canada 2024 tournament will commence on July 25 and conclude on August 11, with the Vancouver Knights starting their campaign against the Toronto Nationals on the opening day.
