Okpotu switches clubs in Saudi
Nigeria striker Anthony Okpotu has swapped clubs in Saudi Arabia, having completed his transfer from Al Ain to Al-Adalah, both in the Saudi First Division, the second tier of Saudi football, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The 30-year-old joined Al Ain from Al Masry ahead of the 2023–24 season and weighed in with 17 goals in 27 matches. He decided to leave for his new club, poised to paint the coming season with goals.
He shared his excitement in a short statement on Instagram on Sunday: “Thank you, Al Ain; it will always end in praise.”
The Makurdi-born player started his career at local club Lobi Stars in 2012. He spent just one season with the Nigeria Premier Football League side before playing for Al-Ittihad Tripoli and has played most of his club football in Arab countries, having also played for Difaâ Hassani El Jadidi, US Monastir, and Qatar SC.
Capped six times by Nigeria since 2018, Okpotu, who also played on loan at Laci of Hungary, made a name for himself in the Nigerian top flight before embarking on a foreign adventure. He is widely revered for his exploits with Lobi Stars, where he scored 19 goals to emerge as the NPFL top scorer in 2017.
He also achieved the feat at US Monastir, scoring 14 goals in 25 matches in the 2019–2020 Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle season.
Last season, Okpotu featured consistently for Al Ain alongside 28-year-old left-footed defender Erhun Obanor, the only Nigerian in the club’s books at the moment, having joined them on July 31, 2023, from Vora on a free transfer.
