PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today said that the opposition’s “hate-driven politics” and labels would not detract him from effectively managing the country.

Speaking about the opposition’s campaign for the Sungai Bakap state by-election in Penang, Anwar said he was aware of numerous labels directed at him, such as “Jewish agent”, and accusations of “selling the country to China”.

“I respond (to these claims) occasionally, but often I don’t bother because I’m thinking about our duties, which are far more significant and challenging,” he said in a speech at the finance ministry’s monthly assembly.

“Facts are completely disregarded (by the opposition). Only hatred is being spread. Should this affect us? No, it will not.”

On a separate matter, Anwar also called on enforcement agencies across ministries and government bodies to increase the collection of tax revenue.

He said boosting tax revenue was crucial for implementing public infrastructure projects like flood control and clean water facilities.

Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said that states such as Kelantan, Penang, Kedah, Perak, and Sabah still face water issues despite efforts to attract investors with good basic facilities.

“These projects entail substantial costs – flood control requires tens of billions, while water supply improvements also require significant investments. The question remains: where will the funding come from? It must come from reasonable tax revenues,” he said.

Anwar also urged enforcement bodies nationwide to maintain high standards in revenue collection, strictly following the law without resorting to shortcuts.

“All enforcement bodies must maintain integrity and avoid malpractice,” he said.

“We have been working hard, for example, with the rationalisation of subsidies such as those for diesel, but it would be a waste if leakages still happen.”
