Supreme Court throws out decision that rejected Trump bid for immunity in election case
Got to stop you there. We are getting that decision on immunity regarding a former president. Trump was over to him and jabbers with the news. Yeah, David, the top line here appears to be a win for former President Trump in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court writing that under our constitutional structure of separated powers, the nature of presidential power entitles a former president to absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for actions within his conclusive and preclusive constitutional authority. And he is entitled to at least presumptive immunity from prosecution for all official acts. There is no immunity for unofficial acts, so. That is largely what Donald Trump has been arguing, which is that for official acts, a former president needs legal immunity. For example, if a president were to order an air strike in a military context that accidentally killed an American, that former president would not then be liable in the courts for that decision. Now, this seems to be an indication that the court on a six to three majority has sided with the former president, Donald Trump. But it is a long decision, guys, and we're going to go through it here to see what the carve outs are, what the caveats are here. And what the implications are now for this court case involving the former president, which has been on hold since March 4th. Whether or not that will be able to proceed under this decision, Guys, back over to you, Amy. Just remind us how it split down there 6/3. 63 Yep. So this is, you know, there are a lot of observers who said that the court, if it wanted to have credibility with the country, ought to be unanimous on this one. This is not a unanimous decision. So there will be some skeptics who say this is a partisan decision coming down on a six three conservative majority. But again, that's just the top line here. We'll need to read the rest of this decision, which is a lengthy 1, in order to figure out what the tests are, what the carve outs are and what the implications are.
