Washington Capitals Acquire Jakob Chychrun from Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa Senators have parted with defenseman Jakob Chychrun after parts of two seasons.

The Senators traded him to the Washington Capitals in exchange for defenseman Nick Jensen and a 2026 third-round pick.

Back in March 2023 before the trade deadline, the Senators traded a 2023 first-round pick, a 2024 second-round pick and a 2026 second-rounder to acquire Chychrun. The 26-year-old often spends in summer in the Ottawa Valley, and his grandfather lives in the area as well.

But with one year left on his contract and the future uncertain on a contract extension, the Senators decided to trade him now and get a return.

And with that, the Capitals are getting a strong left-handed defenseman to prolong their competitive window with Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson in the fold. It's their latest addition after previously acquiring center Pierre-Luc Dubois and winger Andrew Mangiapane.

Chychrun recorded 14 goals, 27 assists and 41 points in 82 games with the Senators this past season. He also averaged 22:23 of ice time per game, recorded the second-most blocked shots on the Senators with 154, took a career-high 204 shots on net and had 16 power-play points.

In 467 career NHL games between the Arizona Coyotes and Senators, Chychrun has 76 goals, 140 assists and 216 points. He's had nine post-season games as well with Arizona, recording one goal.

Nick Jensen, meanwhile, is a right-shot D-man who had a goal and 13 assists for 14 points in 78 games while averaging 19:37 per game.

The 33-year-old has 562 career games played between the Detroit Red Wings and Capitals with 19 goals, 115 assists and 134 points. He also has 27 career playoff games but has yet to record a point that time.

Ottawa now has about $11 million in cap space with RFA Shane Pinto still to sign.
