Paloma Faith hits back at Glastonbury trolls and begs 'give women a break'

Paloma Faith found the social media response to Glastonbury's female artists "absolutely appalling."

The 42-year-old singer performed on the festival's Pyramid stage this Sunday, June 30, after cancelling her headline show at the festival days earlier due to illness.

However, this Monday, July 1, Paloma begged festival-goers to "Give women a break" as criticism targeting other female performers left her livid.

Taking to X, otherwise known as Twitter, the Lullaby songstress penned: "The way people criticise the women who performed a @glastonbury online is absolutely appalling." She then added: "I think people need to understand that women are not on stage to be ridiculed and shamed we are there in all our boss bitch power and we stand by one another. GIVE WOMEN A BREAK."

Paloma then mentioned artists in the likes of Little Simz, Janelle Monae, Dua Lipa and SZA in a comment on her post: "Personally I watched women perform my fave shows of Glastonbury @LittleSimz @JanelleMonae @sza and @DUALIPA were my faves for entertainment power and talent that I managed to catch this year and Janelle's speech about marginalised Communities got me in the heart."

Dua Lipa took to the Pyramid stage herself this Friday, June 28, 2024, but she was accused of lip-syncing by a multitude of fans, prompting the singer to strike back with a three-word response during a chat with The Daily Mail backstage, while she was enjoying down-time with her beau Callum Turner. "I don't mime", the hitmaker said.

Janelle Monae, on the other hand, left fans believing they deserved more as they performed to a small crowd, after Shania Twain's Glastonbury slot on Sunday, June 30, just as England confronted Slovakia (2-1). Multiple viewers at home took to X as one pointed out: "Very small crowd at Janelle Monáe on the Pyramid.. I’m guessing everyone’s watching Avril Lavigne on the Other stage."

Another added at the time, in reference to "Imagine missing JANELLE MONAE for England. while @iplayitagain said: "Feel pity for anyone watching the England game instead of Janelle Monae." A third viewer chimed in: "You all need to turn that football off and stick on Janelle Monae", while another wrote: "Janelle Monae at Glastonbury caused me to forget that some football was occurring. Amazing costume changes and perfect vocals."

Elsewhere, the Sugababes' own slot wreaked havoc at the festival when security stopped some music enthusiasts from heading towards the West Holts stage. The original 1998 line-up of Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena and Siobhan Donaghy were upgraded to the festival’s West Holts stage this year, opening with song Freak Like Me before reeling of hits Overload, Push The Button, and Round Round.

The Sugababes formed in 1998 before Donaghy left in 2001, replaced by Heidi Range. Buena was replaced by Amelle Berrabah in 2005 and Buchanan, the final original member, was replaced by Jade Ewen in 2009. In 2019, the original trio regained the right to use the Sugababes name.
