Report: Maple Leafs Sign Goaltender Matt Murray to One-Year, $875,000 Contract
Matt Murray remains a Toronto Maple Leaf.
According to reports from TSN’s Darren Dreger, the netminder is signing a one-year, $875,000 contract to stay put in Toronto.
The move follows the addition of Anthony Stolarz, who the club signed to a two-year, $5 million contract Monday as free agency opened.
Murray was acquired from the Ottawa Senators in a trade made in July of 2022, that saw his contract still having two years remaining on his four-year, $25 million deal. The Leafs, however, had the Senators retain 25 percent of Murray’s salary. Before his time in Ottawa, Murray played a pivotal role in winning back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
His stint with the Leafs has been underwhelming, to say the least, as the now 30-year-old has been troubled with injuries throughout his tenure. The bumps and bruises in his time in Toronto consist of an abductor, ankle, head, and hip injury, which has resulted in Murray playing in just 26 games for the organization. He missed the duration of the 2023-24 season with the Leafs, while the group maintained a tandem of Ilya Samsonov, Joseph Woll, and Martin Jones. Through 26 appearances, he holds a record of 14-8-2 with a .903 save percentage and a 3.01 goals-against average.
The Thunder Bay, Ontario, native, managed to play in three games for the Marlies in the latter portion of the 2023-24 season and helped them secure a playoff berth, posting a 1-2-0 record with a .846 save percentage and 4.03 goals against average.
Now that he has signed a one-year pact with the Leafs, he could possibly be a fit behind Woll and Stolarz as a depth option.
If the Leafs carry a third goaltender on their active roster, that reduces the cap hit further to $1,580,333. However, what is more likely is Murray starting with the Marlies and his cap number hitting Toronto's books.
Toronto can have as many as 23 players and as few as 20 on their opening night roster, depending on what they want to do.
