Report: Bucks sign Stanley Umude to two-way deal
A couple hours after the Bucks’ first signing of the 2024 offseason was reported, they made another one, but not to the standard roster: 25-year-old wing Stanley Umude formerly of the Pistons. As relayed by The Athletic’s Eric Nehm:
Umude went undrafted out of Arkansas (where he spent his extra year of eligibility granted by COVID after four years at South Dakota) in 2022 and went to training camp for Detroit before spending almost the entire season with their G League affiliate, though he did get into one game with the big league squad in February 2023 while on a ten-day contract. The 6’6” swingman then got a two-way deal entering last season from the Pistons, which was converted to a standard deal this past February. He appeared in 24 games (two starts) averaging 5.3 PPG on .440/.453/.906 shooting during 12.8 MPG. His 307 minutes were not enough to convince new Pistons GM Trajan Langdon to retain him, declining his $2.1m team option to open up more cap space.
Milwaukee finished the season with TyTy Washington Jr., Ryan Rollins, and Jaylin Galloway on two-way contracts, filling their three allotted slots. Washington is an unrestricted free agent, while Rollins’ and Galloway’s two-ways were for two years, including the one ahead. This means that the Bucks currently have all their two-way spots occupied. However, it’s worth noting that since these contracts are not guaranteed, nor do they not count toward the salary cap, tax, or apron since they aren’t part of the standard roster, any of this trio could be released at any time with no liability.
For now, though, it seems likely that we’ll see Umude in Summer League at a minimum, which begins on Saturday, July 13 in Las Vegas. No word yet on the length of his deal, which could cover both the upcoming season and the following one. If it’s one year, he’ll be eligible for restricted free agency next summer. With only two years of NBA experience, though, he’ll remain eligible for a two-way deal next summer. Welcome to Milwaukee, Stanley!
