Liz Cheney Slams Donald Trump Over 'Treason' Post
Former Representative Liz Cheney speaks during an event in Washington, D.C. on December 13, 2023. Cheney, a Republican who represented Wyoming in Congress, slammed former President Donald Trump’s latest post accusing her of “treason.”
Former Representative Liz Cheney slammed former President Donald Trump for sharing a Truth Social post accusing her of "treason."
Cheney, who represented Wyoming's at-large Congressional district in Congress, became one of the most vocal Trump critics in the Republican Party following the January 6, 2021, riot at the United States Capitol building, when a group of the former president's supporters violently protested the 2020 presidential election results.
She has rebuked his unproven election fraud claims and urged the GOP to move on from his style of politics, despite his continued popularity among conservative voters. He is the presumptive Republican presidential nominee and is expected to face President Joe Biden in the November presidential election.
On Sunday, Trump "retruthed" a post to Truth Social, his social media platform, accusing her of "treason."
"Elizabeth Lynne Cheney is guilty of treason. Retruth if you want televised military tribunals," the post, which was originally from a meme account on the platform, reads.
Cheney has not been credibly accused, charged or convicted of treason. It remains unclear exactly what the post was referring to, though Trump and other conservatives criticized her for joining the select committee investigating January 6, 2021 before she left Congress in 2023.
Cheney hit back at Trump in a post to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
"Donald—This is the type of thing that demonstrates yet again that you are not a stable adult—and are not fit for office," Cheney posted.
Newsweek reached out to Trump's campaign and Cheney's PAC, The Great Task, for comment via email.
Trump's post drew criticism from others, as well. Former Illinois Representative Adam Kinzinger, another GOP Trump critic who served on the Jan. 6 committee, posted, "Trump is actual evil."
David Corn, the D.C. bureau chief of Mother Jones, posted, "This is more evidence of Trump's authoritarianism and anti-democratic impulses. Certainly worthy of front-page treatment."
"This would seem to warrant at least a few op-eds calling for this maniac to drop out but maybe he has to say it in a quiet and raspy voice," posted Brett Meiselas, a co-founder of MeidasTouch, referring to calls for Biden to drop out of the presidential race following a shaky debate performance last week.
Following the Jan. 6 riot, Cheney was one of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump, leaving her at odds with many Republican voters. In 2022, the former president campaigned for Cheney's primary opponent, Harriet Hageman, who defeated Cheney in that race and easily won the general election in the deeply Republican state.
Since then, Cheney has frequently criticized the former president. She has said she will never vote for him again. She has not formally endorsed Biden but has suggested she would not rule out voting for him in November.
"My view is I disagree with a lot of Joe Biden's policies. We can survive bad policies. We cannot survive torching the Constitution," Cheney said in January during an interview on The View.
