Putin's Fear Spooks Zelensky: Ukraine Plans New Peace Deal to End the war before 2025

Zelensky plans to end war before the end of 2024 New negotiation conditions being contemplated. Is Zelensky's change of heart related to the US elections? Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has announced that he is developing a new comprehensive plan for ending the ongoing war with Russia. This announcement comes when there was no public peace talk between the two nation and the position on potential peace term remains drastically different. Recently, Vladimir Zelensky also hosted an international peace summit in Switzerland, notably excluding Russia from the event. The summit aimed at gathering support for Ukraine's stance on the conflict. Over 90 countries participated, with most agreeing to the final statement emphasizing the importance of respecting Ukraine's territorial integrity in the peace summit. However, some key nations like India did not endorse this statement, while others, such as China, an ally of Russia, boycotted the summit. Zelensky also stressed the importance of presenting a plan that will garner widespread global support. He views this as a crucial diplomatic strategy to end the war. Ukraine's position has consistently been that Russia must withdraw its troop from all internationally recognized Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, before any peace negotiation could have begun. On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin, who initiated the full scale invasion in February 2022, demands that Ukraine must cede even more territory across its eastern and southern regions. The stark contrast in position highlights the significant challenges in reaching a peaceful resolution. The conflict, meanwhile, has also taken a heavy toll on the military personnel and civilians, prompting Zelensky to emphasize the urgency of developing a new detailed plan within the coming months. He acknowledged the limited time frame, citing high casualty rates as a driving factor. Meanwhile, the situation on the ground continues to evolve. Russian forces are slowly advancing, claiming to have captured another small frontline village. They currently occupy about 1/5 of the Ukraine's territory and the 2020 declared the annexation of the additional 4 regions, although they do not fully control these areas till now. Ukraine's ability to resist the Russian aggression relies heavily on Western financial aid and military support. However, Ukrainian troops face significant challenges being outnumbered, outgunned and exhausted even after more than two years of the continuous war. Also, the US is heading to elections this November, which may also hamper Ukraine's war possibilities, and so the development of this comprehensive peace plan by Zelensky represents a critical step in Ukraine's diplomatic effort to end the war. However, the success of any such plan will depend on various factors, including international support, Russia's willingness to negotiate, and the evolving situation on the battlefield.
