Yankees surprise blockbuster trade would land Astros superstar

As the New York Yankees enter the month of July, proposals and suggestions ahead of the MLB trade deadline are only becoming more prominent.

Some proposals around the league seem far more realistic than others, but MLB has a way of making surprise moves all the time when deadlines arrive.

In outlining some of the top targets the Yankees could acquire before the deadline, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic suggested New York go after one of their rival's superstars in Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman.

In the mock trade, the Yankees send right-handed pitchers Will Warren and Clayton Beeter.

"This may be an overpay for a rental, but the Yankees have what the Astros need: starting pitching. But is it even possible for the two rivals to link up for a player associated with the 2017 Astros?" wrote Kirschner.

This would be a wild turn of events for both teams. Bregman would be a half-year rental before hitting free agency this offseason.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic also weighed in on the possibility of this surprising blockbuster. While he said he loves the fit for Bregman and the Yankees, Bowden also said "However, in my conversations with Astros GM Dana Brown, he’s been clear that under no circumstances will they be sellers at the deadline."

While Yankees fans would have to grapple with the fact that Bregman was a part of the infamous 2017 Astros team, those concerns would likely quiet down once he starts producing at the hot corner.

This type of deal is unlikely to happen, but it would be the type of home run swing Brian Cashman should take.
