The Vancouver Canucks have signed forward Danton Heinen to a two-year, $4.5 million contract. The Langley, British Columbia native, who turns 29 on Friday, will join his hometown team after a "get-right" season in Boston.
A year ago, Heinen did not get a contract from any team. After going through the summer with no suitors, he signed a Professional Contract Agreement with the Bruins and battled through training camp and the early parts of the season before signing a one-year, $775,000 contract at the end of October.
From there, Heinen became one of the biggest contract bargains in the NHL. Despite making minimum pay, Heinen scored 17 goals and 36 points in 74 games. It was his highest single-season point total since 2017-18, when he scored 47 points in his first full season.
The Bruins drafted Heinen in the fourth-round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, and he started his career there before Boston traded him to the Anaheim Ducks during the 2020 NHL Trade Deadline. Following Anaheim and a short stint in Pittsburgh, Heinen wound up back in Boston.
After a productive season with the team that drafted him, Heinen gets a pay raise with the team he grew up rooting for, and he'll be joined by Bruins teammate Jake DeBrusk, who signed a seven-year deal with Vancouver on Monday.
