Original Buc-ee's in Luling catches on fire during demolition

The Buc-ee's opened in 2003 and closed on June 10. A brand new travel center that replaced it wasn't damaged by the fire.

LULING, Texas — The site of the former Buc-ee's gas station in Luling caught fire Monday morning, the Caldwell County Office of Emergency Management said.

Buc-ee's opened a brand new location next door to the original gas station just three weeks ago, and since then, crews have been doing demolition at the old site. It was not immediately clear whether the demolition process led to the fire, according to a report from the Gonzales Inquirer.

No injuries have been reported. The area around Buc-ee's was blocked off Monday, and people were asked not to turn into the store from Highway 183, the Inquirer reported.

Multiple fire departments responded to provide assistance, and they said that the fire was not expected to endanger the new Buc-ees location, which the company calls the world's largest.

Buc-ee's opened the original Luling travel center in 2003. It closed June 10, and the new location opened nearby the next morning.

The newly opened Luling location has twice the square footage of the original travel center, making it the biggest Buc-cee's yet. The new location occupies more than 75,000 square feet and will offer 120 fueling stations and thousands of food and drink options.

Buc-ee's operates 50 stores across Texas and the South. There are currently 35 Buc-ee's stores in Texas; four in Alabama; two each in Florida, Georgia and Tennessee; and one each in Colorado, Kentucky, Missouri and South Carolina. The company also broke ground on its first Virginia and Mississippi locations earlier this year.
