Golden State Warriors legend Klay Thompson 'joining the Dallas Mavericks on three-year, $50M deal'

Klay Thompson is set to join the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year, $50million deal after a glittering run with the Golden State Warriors, according to ESPN.

Thompson reportedly had plenty of suitors, including a few offering him more lucrative four-year contracts than the Mavericks.

However, Thompson's desire to compete for a fifth championship and take a deal in a place with less in state taxes drew him to Dallas.

Now, the Mavericks have one of the NBA's top trios in Thompson, Luka Doncic, and Kyrie Irving. The Lakers were the other team who showed the most interest, per ESPN.

The deal with Dallas is reportedly also part of a sign-and-trade agreement that also involves the Charlotte Hornets.

Thompson has spent his entire NBA career with the Warriors since being selected by the franchise with the No 11 pick in the 2011 draft.

Thompson won four NBA titles with the Warriors and was a key part of the franchises dynasty run from 2015-2022, making the All-Star game five times.

Alongside Steph Curry and Draymond Green, the Warriors appeared in five straight NBA Finals from 2015-2019, playing the LeBron James-led Cavaliers in four of those.

The Mavericks themselves played in the NBA Finals last season, falling in five games to the Boston Celtics.

In 2019, Thompson signed a five-year, $190 million maximum contract with the Warriors despite rumors he wanted to go elsewhere and prove he could be the No 1 guy on another franchise.

The Warriors will play a season without Thompson for the first time in 13 years, Keith Smart's only season as the team's head coach.

Thompson will turn 35 in the middle of the next NBA season, meaning his window to win another championship is closing.

This move to Dallas gives that hope more life, compared to a 10th-place Warriors team from last season.
