Shimano Unveils New EP5 and E5100 E-Bike Motors
Electric bike enthusiasts, rejoice! Shimano has unveiled two exciting new mid-drive motors, the EP5 and E5100, promising to take your e-biking experience to the next level.
More Power, More Exploration:
The EP5 stands out as a powerhouse, boasting a maximum torque of 60Nm (Newton meters) and compatibility with Class 3 e-bikes, which can reach speeds of up to 28 mph with electric assist. This translates to effortless climbing and conquering those challenging terrains you’ve been eyeing.
The E5100, while offering a slightly lower torque of 50Nm, is designed for Class 1 and 2 e-bikes, perfect for riders prioritizing a smooth and natural ride experience with a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph.
Lightweight Design, Extended Range:
Both motors are impressively lightweight, with the EP5 weighing in at 3kg (6.6 lbs) and the E5100 at a mere 2.4kg (5.3 lbs). This translates to a more nimble ride without sacrificing power.
Shimano has also addressed range concerns with a variety of battery options – 418Wh, 504Wh, and 630Wh. Depending on your chosen motor, battery selection, and assist mode, expect ranges to vary from 23km (14.3 mi) up to a staggering 260km (162 mi).
Customization at Your Fingertips:
Shimano’s E-Tube Project app allows you to personalize your riding experience by fine-tuning the assist levels for different modes (Eco, Trail, Boost) on both motors. This lets you tailor the power output to your specific needs and riding style.
Availability on the Horizon:
While Shimano hasn’t revealed a specific release date, these motors are expected to hit the market sometime in the third or fourth quarter of 2024. So, get ready to see them powering the latest e-bikes soon!
