Report: Vikings to re-sign Cam Akers pending results of physical

The running game was a bit of a sore spot for the Minnesota Vikings last season, but it sounds like they could be bringing back a familiar face to try to shore things up if things go the right way.

Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press is reporting that, pending the results of his upcoming physical, the Vikings are likely to re-sign running back Cam Akers, who was with the team last season before suffering a season-ending Achilles injury, the second of his career.

The Vikings traded for Akers last September, making him active for the first time in Week 4. He had 138 yards rushing and a touchdown on 38 carries for the team last year, along with 11 catches for 70 yards.

The Achilles injury that Akers suffered in November was the second of his career. When he was with the Rams, he tore his right Achilles during Training Camp but rehabbed quickly enough to be back for the final regular season game of that season as well as every game the Rams played on their run to winning the Super Bowl that season. He tore his left Achilles this past season but has already had more time to rehabilitate that injury than he spent rehabbing his previous one.

Akers could be a solid addition to the Vikings’ running back room, which might be getting a little bit crowded. The team added veteran Aaron Jones this offseason to be the lead back and Ty Chandler has earned an opportunity to play a greater role in the offense as well. There’s also Kene Nwangwu, whose career might have gotten a new breath of life this offseason when the league modified the kickoff return rules.
