Three-time Stanley Cup winner Alec Martinez will not be returning to the Vegas Golden Knights and will be signing a one-year deal with the Chicago Blackhawks.
After five seasons with the Golden Knights, Martinez will be moving on. The 35-year-old will be joining a young core in Chicago headlined by Connor Bedard and Kevin Korchinski. He'll be a veteran presence alongside Nick Foligno and will try to guide the team in the right direction.
Martinez struggled to impact the game the same way he has in the past. This season, he played in 55 games scoring four goals and 17 points. Martinez's stats were never what you looked at with him but his ability to defend the rush and move the puck was faltering at times.
Saying that, Martinez was a great Golden Knight and will be remembered for playing a crucial role in their quest for a Stanley Cup.
The American defenceman has played in 818 games with just two franchises and played in 221 regular season games with the Golden Knights. His impact on both franchises in the playoffs will always stand out. He's dressed for 131 playoff games and has scored clutch goals including the cup clinching goal for the Los Angeles Kings in 2014.
The Blackhawks will be paying Martinez $4M this season.
