DPP lodges appeal against Cathal Crotty’s suspended sentence
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has lodged an appeal against the suspended sentence imposed on soldier Cathal Crotty last month for beating a woman unconscious in an unprovoked attack on the grounds of undue leniency.
The appeal, which could take up to a year to be heard, was lodged on Friday.
Natasha O’Brien was coming from work with her friend Shauna Daly when she was assaulted by Crotty (22) after she denounced his use of homophobic slurs.
The case has mobilised the public in protest after Limerick Circuit Criminal Court Judge Tom O’Donnell handed Crotty a three-year suspended sentence. He also ordered the man to pay €3,000 to Ms O’Brien.
